Overview

The Impedance Imaging Research Center (IIRC) was founded in 2002 as an Engineering Research Center (ERC) supported by the National Research Foundation (NRF) of Korea and Kyung Hee University (KHU). With its main office and laboratories located at KHU, more than 17 faculty members and researchers from 6 different universities in Korea joined the center between 2002 and 2011.

After the NRF-funded ERC project ended in 2011, the IIRC has continued its R&D as a research center of KHU. In 2015, the IIRC moved its main office and laboratory to the Kyung Hee Medical Science and Research Institute in the Kyung Hee University Hospital. Since 2015, the IIRC has been focusing on clinical applications of electrical impedance tomography (EIT) and conductivity tensor imaging (CTI). In 2016, a spin-off startup BiLab was founded to commercialize the EIT technology developed at the IIRC. Lately, the IIRC launched new multidisciplinary R&D projects to develop engineered tissues and cell therapeutics. Impedance imaging methods will be used for nondestructive testing of engineered tissues and cultured cells.
